Matchmaking site for innovators and academics short-listed for UK IT award

24th  November 2016 – A Tessella project with the National Centre for Universities and Business that applies innovative data analytics and intelligent search has been short-listed for the Computing UK IT Awards, the benchmark for outstanding performance in the UK computing industry.

Tessella worked collaboratively with the National Centre for Universities and Business to develop an intelligent matchmaking platform which connects businesses with challenges to UK academics who can offer solutions. The goal is to stimulate new technological breakthroughs and economic growth by promoting university-business collaboration – part of the government’s strategy to make the UK the best place in the world for such innovation.

The principle output of the project was a new online platform – Konfer – which combines approaches used by the likes of Google and Amazon to foster links between business and universities.

Konfer identifies relevant sources from across the internet using information processing and text analysis tools. It extracts relevant content and presents it in a variety of ways – using search, curation and recommendation engines – designed to prompt collaboration.

Joe Marshall, Chief Operating Officer and Director of Strategy, the National Centre for Universities and Business added: “Being recognised for the work we are doing and what we are trying to achieve with Konfer provides us with great encouragement. Even in this decade alone, so much has been accomplished by UK businesses and universities, and with all the different innovations that can possibly be achieved through continued collaboration, we believe that the most exciting updates are still to come.”

Darren Hunter, Project Manager at Tessella, says: “This project is a great example of how powerful platforms can be developed which automatically pull in vast amounts of readily available information, apply data analytics, and wrap it all in an easy to use interface. In this way, the user can be quickly matched to the most relevant information, even if they only have a vague idea of what they are looking for. And what’s even better is that, in doing so, we are making the UK a more innovative country. We’re really pleased to have been short-listed for such an exciting project.”
